BankWest (Bank of Western Australia Ltd) is am Australian owned Bank which first opened its doors for business in 1895, as the Agricultural Bank of Western Australia. It was established by the Government of Western Australia to help develop the State’s farming industry.

BankWest is now a full service bank and a wholly owned subsidiary of HBOS plc, a company registered in Scotland, which is part of the United Kingdom. BankWest has since been purchased by the Commonwealth Bank.

At present, BankWest is considered one of the market leaders in its home state Western Australia. In 2007 BankWest announced a major expansion program that should see the bank open 160 stores on the east coast over the next three years, subject to approval of that plan by BankWests new owners. A short time later, this regional bank was purchased by the Commonwealth Bank.

BankWest currently relies heavily on third party distribution channels, agencies and electronic banking facilities, as well as 24-hour telephone and internet banking services to support its’ customers outside of Western Australia.
